Bio / Info

I started making photographs when I was eleven, on a family trip to Disneyland. I think we were on a boat ride through a very fake jungle and I thought, how cool is this to be cruising through some exotic place taking picures? Much to my mother's chagrin, I did not capture any of those 'Kodak Moments' of the family in front of the castle, as i was too busy capturing images of a different sort. In high school I was that yearbook / newspaper guy. Twenty rolls of Tri-X a week, always smelling like stop bath. Undergraduate BA in Studio Art. Graduate School in L.A. studying photography. Then it was time to return 'back East'.

For over a decade I was a partner at Hing / Norton Inc. a commercial studio in NYC specializing in still life photography for advertising and design firms. During this time we created images for a range of clients such as Air France, Avon, AT&T, British Airways, Canon, Dunhill, Grey Poupon, IBM, Nikon, Smirnoff's and many more. Awards received include Graphis, Communication Arts, and the Society of Publication Designers. Enter the child. Priorities and realities shift.

For the last twenty six years I have been teaching photography and film making at The Williston Northampton School. For many of the summer breaks I worked on a series of black and white panoramic images captured while traveling as a leader of student tours overseas. I'm not sure how long I'll continue with this work, as I've begun staying 'in situ' more than logging miles on recent trips. In March of 2018 I was fortunate to be selected for a residency in Ireland. The portfolio of images are the result of being forced inside due to three feet of snow, just days before arriving. The botanicals are far from fully realized and something that only seems to work in the summer. We'll see where things go, but for now I'm enjoying the journey.

Thanks for reading this far and for taking a look at the images.

Sincerely,

Edward Hing
